THE TWENTIETH WIFE

Much anticipating storyline, a precise description of the surroundings and characters...

The Twentieth Wife is a novel of tradition, it is not just about a character it tells a story of an empire and the people associated with the empire. It can be said that the main focus is the empress known as Nur Jahan but I felt that everyone in the story was given equal parts. It was an overall narration, the author was narrating it as a story, not as a viewpoint of any one character in most of the parts. Description of palaces and the different locations was to the point like so detailed and beautifully done. And of course, the food description was mouth-watering like it was done not so often but I just felt as if the dish is in front of me and I cannot control myself from feeling hungry. The book had so much to tell about the life of women in the harem(forbidden place), it was itself a challenging place to spend life. The rules of the harem were quite flabbergasting for me, it is the first book in the Taj Mahal trilogy. I found the first half of the book slow somehow, the second half is dramatic and quite interesting. I started reading the second book and it seems interesting so far....
